I need dipole moment explained as simply as possible?

I'm taking college general chemistry cl, and dipole moment is not explained well at all in our book. Our teacher makes no sense, and I usually figure it out on my own but I can't because it isn't explained much at all, so can someone please tell me about it, how to find it, etc, somewhat plainly?
